"Since 1985, I've used a Shiley No. 8 Fenestrated trach tube, a disposable tube which gets replaced every 6 months or so. The trachs came with a bright red DCP (decannulation plug) that fit into the trach and allowed me to speak and taste my food. The plugs were a bright red to enable nurses, etc. to locate the trach for suctioning, etc. I found out that the plugs were also available in a more cosmetic white for home use, etc. Early on in 1985, I contacted Shiley about possibly buying some of the white ones for my future use. A respiratory specialist there sent me 20 individually sealed, white DCPs which lasted me until last year, when I lost my last one. These particular DCPs were a button type with an inch or so tubular extension that fit into the main trach tube and had a twist lock. They also had a soft plastic cover cap on top of the button that I was able to punch small holes in so I could breathe easier when I had the plug in. Until a couple of years ago, the tubes I used to replace my old trachs included the DCPs that I could modify for my use. Then they were replaced by DCPs made of a hard plastic, without the soft plastic cap. These new DCPs cannot be punctured by sharp pins. Now my 'breathing' holes must be carefully hand drilled with very small and fragile drill bits which break easily. Does anyone have any around that they want to get rid of?" Tony, Missouri, soberstill@juno.com

I have muscular dystrophy and have been on a ventilator for the past 19 years. I use a Puritan Bennett low profile exhalation valve that connects directly to my trach that they no longer manufacture and do not know of anyone who may have a supply of them. He gave me the PB stock number of the valve from an older catalog he had. I have tried several other types of valves but this particular one has been the only one that has helped me in that it has a ridge inside which collects condensation for long periods of time thereby requiring less suctioning. The number is 4-000563-00. Any help in finding and obtaining a source for this valve would be greatly appreciated. Joseph, San Antonio, Texas

Monaghan 517 IPPB ventilatorI am a 57-year-old polio survivor who did the iron lung thing for 6 weeks in 1952. After that, I had no respiratory problems until 1980. Since then I have been using a Bennett AP5 for IPPB treatments every 3-4 waking hours. I have been able to continue teaching, going to meetings, traveling, shopping, etc. because of a portable machine that runs off my car's cigarette lighter adaptor. It is called a "Monaghan 517 IPPB Ventilator." We purchased it in 1981 from a home health care company in Wichita, Kansas, that is no longer in business. I called the Monaghan Company. No one there has ever heard of this vent, and there are none tucked away on their back shelves, etc. We have repaired Photo of old Monaghan equipmentthis one so many times. But it will not last forever! I cannot find a modern piece of equipment that works as well as this one does for me. Joan suggested I post this request with pictures here. Perhaps someone has a Monaghan 517 that is no longer needed. I will gladly pay for it. If you can help me find this "dinosaur," please contact info@ventusers.org. Thank you. Jean Graber
